Everyday is a Holiday!

I heard about National Clean Off Your Desk Day on the news this morning. I keep a neat and almost absent work environment, not because I have OCD, but because I’m crazy, lol. So I did a search on the web and stumbled upon this list. It’s fun to read. I have my daughter celebrating Buy Nothing Day, so why not these.

There are some great holidays on this list. January 14, Organize Your Home Day, I would love to spend several days organizing things at home. I was just thinking about my next few days off and how I need to clean out my filing cabinet and shred some stuff.

May 4th, Reading is Fun Week. This is all I want to do anyway, so okay.
May 11th, Eat What You Want Day. No explanation of why needed here. Actually I think I’m already celebrating this one.
Aug. 13th, National Underwear Day. I’m intrigued.
Aug. 15th, probably my favorite National Relaxation Day.
Nov. 6 – National Men Make Dinner Day. Actually this should be Month, National Men Make Dinner Month.

Vegetate Day

Once a month, for a several hours anyway, I push everything aside and I relax, physically and mentally. Never mind the pile of laundry that needs to be ironed. So what the dishes aren’t washed right after a meal. I’m a full time pajama lounger. My hair probably doesn’t see a comb until the next day.

Vegetate Day is when I ignore responsibility and I don’t feel bad about it. I lie in bed with no agenda and watch TV or catch up on movies that I have been meaning to watch. One of my favorite TV shows from the late 80’s was Beauty and the Beast starring Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton. I’m actually watching Season 1 right now as I type this post. The writing, the poetry, the classical music gave it a huge following among women as probably the most romantic show during its time. It’s a beautiful show and if you haven’t seen an episode, this series deserves a spot in your DVD collection. Watch it with a loved one and a bottle of Advil you will need from crying. The TV sound track consists of poetry read by Perlman himself as well as a selection of some of the best classical music.

Some of my other favorites include: Sisters, The Cosby Show, Murphy Brown and The Honeymooners. To me, this is when TV was good! What were some of your favorite, but not forgotten shows?

Buy Nothing Day

Today I just found out that I’m a supporter of a movement that protests spending on November 23rd, otherwise known as Black Friday.

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, when retailers open up their doors to consumers, as early as midnight, hoping to capitalize on holiday spending, or overspending, by offering deep discounts.

Of course, not everyone is pleased with the consumption of stuff. Adbusters Magazine editor, Kalle Lasn created an unofficial holiday called, Buy Nothing Day to be celebrated on November 23* or Black Friday. They hope to get consumers to stop their excessive spending habits and realize that everything we buy has an impact on the environment.

Adbusters website says that “Buy Nothing Day is not really about refusing to spend a dime over the holiday season. It’s about taking a deep breath and deciding to opt out of the hype‚ the overcrowded malls‚ and the stressful to–do lists. It’s about reminding ourselves to really think about what we are buying‚ why we are buying it‚ and whether we really need it at all.”

What’s funny is that I have a rule in my home that says: When we buy something, something else has to go. I do this more so to combat clutter than to save the environment.

I like the idea of Buy Nothing Day, but what I don’t like is the irregularity of it all. How come we can’t implement more Buy Nothing Days in our life. How come we can’t be nicer to people all year round, instead of just around the holiday season? How come we have to wait until Thanksgiving or Christmas to get the family together? These things should be a way of life and not something we put on and take off like a coat. What happens on November 24th, do we go back to consuming and buying stuff we don’t need?

I’m not much of a social or environmental activist, but I do what I can for the environment. I’m not against shopping, I love to shop when I have money and I actually need the item, but I do wonder how much of this stuff that we buy will be sitting in a landfill this time next year.

What do you think about this unofficial holiday and are you planning on being in the stores on Black Friday? I’ll pass.

*November 23 and runs through November 26 in some countries.

Why I Hate Halloween

There are so many reasons why I don’t like this holiday. Here’s a short list:

  1. Most of the movies shown in October are horror movies. I’m scared.
  2. The holiday can have a demonic or magical overtone. This freightens me.
  3. It’s a commercial based holiday just to get your money. I’m already broke.
  4. I read the origin of Halloween. I’m not impressed.
  5. What or who are we honoring again? The Dead?

I know, I’m being an ogre, a killjoy, a party pooper and I’m supposed to go with the flow, but I’m sure I can sit this one out.

Signed,
Happy Shallow Queen!
