Vegetate Day

Once a month, for a several hours anyway, I push everything aside and I relax, physically and mentally. Never mind the pile of laundry that needs to be ironed. So what the dishes aren’t washed right after a meal. I’m a full time pajama lounger. My hair probably doesn’t see a comb until the next day.

Vegetate Day is when I ignore responsibility and I don’t feel bad about it. I lie in bed with no agenda and watch TV or catch up on movies that I have been meaning to watch. One of my favorite TV shows from the late 80’s was Beauty and the Beast starring Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton. I’m actually watching Season 1 right now as I type this post. The writing, the poetry, the classical music gave it a huge following among women as probably the most romantic show during its time. It’s a beautiful show and if you haven’t seen an episode, this series deserves a spot in your DVD collection. Watch it with a loved one and a bottle of Advil you will need from crying. The TV sound track consists of poetry read by Perlman himself as well as a selection of some of the best classical music.

Some of my other favorites include: Sisters, The Cosby Show, Murphy Brown and The Honeymooners. To me, this is when TV was good! What were some of your favorite, but not forgotten shows?

I Hate TV!

Okay I don’t hate TV, but I can do without it. What I don’t understand is when do people have time to sit down and watch TV? I guess when I’m sitting at my computer surfing the Internet? Personally, I watch two shows a week, The Suze Orman Show and Desperate Housewives. Oh I try to catch the morning news before going to work and I also watch my NJ Nets.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says children shouldn’t watch TV before they’re two so that their brains can develop properly. Katie Couric says parents should avoid using the TV as a babysitter.

TV is not as good as it used to be, it’s not even funny. It’s vulgar, it’s violent, they show you everything, I wouldn’t even call it Tell-e-vision, but Show-e-vision, nothing is left to the imagination.

My daughter wants to know how come we don’t have a TV in the car and truth is, I don’t want a TV in the car, if she needs to watch something that bad, stay home. (Of course, we do have a portable DVD player for long car trips. I’m okay with that, but we don’t need a TV on for local errands). We normally talk, do math problems, play games or just be quiet while in the car. She’s enrolled in the TV turn-off through her school, and only gets 1 hour of TV time each day and her weekends are free. I love TV turn-off.

Some people sleep with the TV on and some people leave it on for background noise. I don’t need it, I can watch my shows on the internet. LOL. I’m a bookworm, I feel naked without a book and I’m sure maybe that’s how people feel without their television. I’m certainly not knocking anyone if you love television, do you! I love the Internet. Everything in moderation.

PS - How many hours a week do you or your kids spend watching TV? Have you used the TV as a babysitter? What do you think about what the AAP said?

I’m feeling a bit Ellen-ish* this morning

Sigh. You know what? I’m a little upset this morning. I wonder if I can call my job and cancel them for two days. I understand how Ellen felt and now that she has given me the visual, I know how to work it. I’ll just go to work, sit at my desk with a tissue, sobbing, saying:

“Something is so terribly wrong and I can’t sit here and pretend to be funny and pretend I want to work when things are just so wrong.”

The fact is I DO have to pretend. Nobody wants to hear my sad story with the violins playing in the background. Nobody cares! So I’m going to get dressed, go to work, smile, pretend I’m not upset and get an Emmy for doing it.

*This is not a rip on Ellen, that’s my girl, but she’s sought of how I’m feeling today, everything except the gay part, as in happy.

Two Wrongs Don’t Make A Right

I’m almost too tired to voice my opinion on this whole Ellen fiasco. I said, almost.

I love you Ellen, but you’re wrong. Not necessarily for not reading the fine print, who reads the fine print, but you were wrong for taking a private matter to a public forum.

To Mutts and Moms, you’re wrong too. No Ellen doesn’t deserve any special treatment because she’s famous, I hate special treatment, but could your organization perhaps gone into the home to see if the new family was qualified to take care of Iggy. This isn’t about what’s in the best interest of the dog, this is about your policy and how nobody, not even Ellen, can break it.

When we have conflicts with people, it’s best to privately go to that person and work it out. Don’t broadcast the problem and collect your army of supporters. Ellen you know you are very influential and have a large following of people who adore you. Now, their organization is the target of death threats. To the other side, your policy seems to be one of haste and a bit inhumane. Pun so intended. Now we have divisions among two groups of people who don’t know all of the facts, but are adamant about who’s at fault here, myself included. I say give the darn dog back.

I’m convinced that people who don’t extend mercy have never been shown mercy. (If I can’t get a break, then why should you?) No they can’t do this for everyone who doesn’t read the fine print, but would it really hurt to look at the individual situation and then make a decision based on knowledge and not law.

I went into Annie Sez a few months ago and bought a pair of slacks that was a final sale item. When I got to the register to pay, the cashier looked at the tag and said, this item is a final sale. I said I don’t know what that means. She said, it means that once you buy it, you cannot return or exchange it and no store credit. I knew they would fit and I said okay, that’s fine. The cashier made sure there was no doubt in my mind that she did not want to see me again with those pants unless I was wearing them in the store to buy something else. FINAL SALE. I got it.

It seems odd though that Ellen was just unaware of this stipulation. Again, we don’t know all the facts, so it should have been kept a private matter.

Now I just have to get this image out of my head of Ellen pleading and crying on t.v. My mother says she’s full of crap.
