CHAOS (Can’t Have Anyone Over Syndrome)

Several months ago I asked a group of people: Is the orderliness (of your home) or lack thereof, a reflection of your life. Most felt that it was ‘a personality trait’ and not necessarily a reflection of their life. They reasoned some people can be total slobs, but productive, while others can be meticulously neat and never get anything done.
Personally, I can’t function if things are not “in their place”, that’s just me. I don’t always like that about me, sometimes, I wish I didn’t care, but I do. I don’t like looking for stuff, I just rather put something where it belongs. That’s my only touch it once rule, I try not to create more work for myself later.
I did a little research about clutter and one website said that “clutter is more of a physical expression of our emotional condition than it is about our organizational skills.”
Do you think this is true? It’s all the same to me, cluttered and messy, it’s unkempt! Some people feel there are more important things in life than having a clean and tidy home and are okay with a mess.
I want to know how you feel when you walk into someone’s home, or even your own home, and it’s tore up from the floor up? Do you feel good? Who says neat is right?

im just like you, even if i want to do something at home, ill try to put things in place before doing it.
btw, nice pic
I know how you feel. I do try to give myself a break and turn the other cheek for a minute, but I prefer not to live in a mess.
Thanks, not my pic, but a great visual.
I’ve known depressed, anxious people who live in meticulously kept homes, and I’ve known some joyful, relaxed people who live in a creative chaos they find enjoyable.
Sometimes clutter is an expression of your inner soul. And sometimes it’s simply that you’re in a too small house, with too many hours on a job, and more important things to do than to knitpick through your belongings…because life is out there waiting to be lived.
So then, I take it that’s NOT a picture of your family room?
I’ll admit to being very cluttery and disorganized…which used to frustrate me to no end because I also tend to be a perfectionist…but as I’ve gotten a little older/mellower/wiser, I’ve lower my expectations just a tad & have since learned to tolerate myself & my messes much better!
And to me…there is a huge difference between messy & dirty. I don’t do dirty!
Heck no that’s not my living room, lol. I want to jump in that picture and clean it up, it urks me to no end.
Funny bit when I was on the road in the truck I was very meticulous…I didn’t even allow shoes being worn in it and had a par of slippers I used to drive in…but at home now most of the time not so much….
Thanks for your opinion Lauren, this topic is so debatable, and I’d like to be able to sit down on a uncluttered couch and talk about it.
Hey Robert,
That’s funny….slippers. I really do enjoy cleaning. Just put on some music, kick everybody out of the house and I could go for hours.
oh my gosh this IS my life right now! my goal this weekend is to get my house in order so my daughter and I can enjoy having friends over to the house off/on through the holidays
Good article, I think clutter can be a sign of your emotional condition, but more often it just happens because the universe is set up to “tend from a state of order to a state of disorder”.
It can also happen because we’re just plain busy.
I am very anal I have must have a clean house. It drives my boyfriend crazy
Hey B,
Yeah for another neat freak. We’ll convert the world one by one. lol

Hey don’t tempt me Harleyblues. I’m sick right now, but as soon as I get better, I’m going to go clean something! LOL.
even though i don’t wanna live in such an environment, i would call it creative chaos :p
I know that I can’t do ‘it’ in the mess. It is a turn off. Cleanliness is next to sexiness in my book.
It sure is Joe, lol.
