Does Giving Make You Richer?
Money April 21st, 2008“A man there was, tho’ some did count him mad, the more he cast away, the more he had.” This is a quote from John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress. The character Gaius solves the riddle thus: “He that bestows his Goods upon the Poor Shall have as much again, and ten times more.”
Do you think that giving makes you richer? Studies show that people who give charitably make more money than those who don’t and not because they have money to give, but because giving encourages receiving. When people see you giving, they want to give to you.
According to The Giving U.S.A. Foundation it estimated “that Americans donated nearly $300 billion to charity in 2006.” This figure doesn’t surprise me, as a nation we are a giving people, especially when it comes to responding to disaster.
I do think we expect those who are doing well financially to give a lot and often. On two personal finance blogs that I read, one blogger ‘seemed’ to pass judgment on an episode of Oprah’s Big Giveaway for promoting handing out “plastic toys” to a group of kids instead of doing something that would have lasting benefit.
Another blogger wrote a post about a governor who made almost $300,000 in 2007, but reported less than $200.00 on his tax return. The governor’s character and priorities were questioned and his donations were used as a comparison to their own or someone else’s giving. When I make charitable donations throughout the year I never claim them as deductions on my taxes. I never give to charity just to get a tax deduction but I’m also not giving thousands of dollars.
It’s been my personal experience that when I give to someone in need or donate to a charity, I get back what I just gave if not more. I’m not sure how much richer I am, but it does make me a lot happier.
How do you feel about giving, do you think it makes you richer?

I believe in giving, and in the act of giving we are often receive something back that’s priceless.
We can always find others who are less fortunate than us, so if we are in a position to make some kind of charitable contribution (money or other types of donations), why not?

It definitely feels good to give. Expecting something back in return can diminish the benefits of happiness that you derive from giving.
There are also plenty of ways to give; it need not always be in the form of money. Sometimes, a small act of kindness is all that is needed to lift the spirits of someone else.

I agree with the idea that giving makes you richer in your soul. However I happen to be a ’selfish’ person most of the time.

I give to something I believe in..I don’t get a tax deduction for it because it’s an American charity which is not recognised in Canada..but I choose to do so not for the return to me but for the cause….

I give to the ASPCA, but other than free, cute, address labels, I’m not feelin’ any richer. I understand the concept though- what goes around usually comes back around.
Oh and I’ve tagged you for a meme… Aren’t you excited? Ha ha

I agree Barbara, if you are in a position to give, then do so. I often give my “last dollar” at times, I just feel that it will return to me somehow. I don’t even worry about it. As long as home is taken care of, I don’t mind giving up the last bit.
Evelyn, when I started writing this post I was all over the place with ways to give, including time, but yep, you’re right…there’s more than one way.
Meleah, I am selfish when it comes to my time. I won’t hesitate to say no if I can’t or don’t want to do something. I’m working on that..I won’t be a yes woman, but at least a maybe woman. I have some time related giving to do tomorrow, 2 people standing in line for my services. lol
Robert that’s the only kind of giving I do, something I believe in where I don’t have to worry about if the funds are being misused. Did you say American Charity? Did you know there is a charity called The Valerie Fund not too far from where I live? Wink. Wink.
That’s a great charity, the one for the animals, not the accountants. lol Oh a meme, me? I have to go check it out. I hope I can do it, Corrina.

I think giving makes you better as a person. It’s something that breeds compassion for your fellow man. I am also selfish when it comes to my time, but I’m more than willing to give money, blood, clothes, food, or whatever else I can. Just don’t expect me to give up a weekend or something (yes, this is bad. But at least it’s true!).

Jillian, I agree it does breed compassion and everything is not about you (not you) when you’re giving. I’m the same with my time…I rather pay someone else to do something than give up my time…that’s more precious than money. I do appreciate it though when people give up their time for me. I have things to work on, but like you said, it’s true.

I tend to give money or material things more often than I give of myself. My time, my heart….those things I’m selfish about.

Hi H.E. Eigler, I think a lot of us are like that. It’s easy to do, but we all seem to agree on the value of time. I just happen to need my me time or I’m an evil witch! It’s for the safety of others really……

If you believe in the Law of Attraction (not necessarily what’s written in the book The Secret but the general philosophy), then you definitely receive more as you give more. Something about the universe and abundance and creating a flow of energy back and forth. Pretty interesting.

I don’t think there’s any kind of correlation between giving & receiving, personally, & I’d experimented with it for years. Giving gives me that warm feeling inside, though, which still counts for something.

What’s up JD at I Do Things! I really don’t follow the law of attraction, the book, but I do think there is something to giving and receiving. I think Nicey on Clean House says when your hands are open to give, they are open to receive. That’s true.
You don’t think so Lana? Well yeah, that warm feeling does count for something and a number of studies have been done to show that givers prosper, financially and physically. When you give the part of the brain the controls pleasure is active.

I think i agree somewhat with your post, that in general when you do good, good things happen to you. Mostly i agree with Lana though, that there may not be direct correlation but giving and receiving. Giving is a wonderful feeling, simply because you can share in the joy you bring to the person you give something to.
