High Priced Domain

Yes I changed my blog look. I’ve been casually looking around for something and I stumbled upon this one yesterday and decided to go with it. I don’t like to change themes too often and I hope to stick with this one. How many times have you changed blog themes?

I’m in the process of trying to integrate my personal website or at least give it the same look as my blog: my cut and paste version. My photographs have been moved to Flickr and can be viewed there or through this blog, the link is up top.

Anywho, a few days ago I got an email from Yahoo saying that their domain renewal will increase from $12.95 to $34.95. I have 8 domains registered with Yahoo and four with another registrar. I’m giving up the ones I don’t need.

As for the rest, I’m moving to another company, which registers them privately (something Yahoo charges extra for) for under $10. I don’t know why a domain name would cost $34.95, but if that is the going rate, someone please enlighten me. How much do you pay?

PS - Oh, I forgot to mention, that in the future if my blog is down, it’s because I’m changing registrars. I’ll be back. I’m testing a transfer now on a domain I want to keep to see how things work out.

Looks like I got to the party early for a change…

As far as total blog make-overs, I think I’m currently on a variation of my 3rd one. My blog was originally hosted at Geocities and was done by hand in HTML, so changes were few and far between. Now that I’ve moved over to Blogger, I’ve had the same template, but I play with the colors, spacing, width, etc every so often.

As far as domain names, I haven’t jumped on that boat yet. Maybe once I figure out what I want to be when I grow up and am able to determine the need for a personal domain, I’ll hope on that ship.

Btw, I dig the new template. Very clean and easy to read on the eyes. It loads slightly faster too.

    Hi Natural,

WOW! This is great! It looks very easy to navigate, and I bet it easy to work on the back end too.

I’ve changed my theme about a half dozen times (in 15 months), and am in the process of testing a new theme.

The last time I paid for an additional domain name was through Bluehost and I think it was $10.00 for a year registration.

  4. 4Robin

Very nice look. I actually can’t remember what the old one looked like now! (tho I looked at it lots)

I buy my domains from DreamHost, which is cheap and has whois privacy built in. Then I change the name servers to (usually) Little Oak, because I had terrible trouble with DreamHost being slow, when I first started earlier this year.

Wow, you’re being ripped off. I’d look for a new register to use.

But .. wait … how long does your domain registration last for? Some are yearly, some are two years, or even longer. How many years are you paying for with that.

But to answer your question, we pay about £10 per year for a .com domain - so we’d be paying £20 for the two year registration and you can’t register for less than two years, with a .com, apparently. £20 = just under $40 US, at today’s exchange rate.

Hi Natural: I’ve changed my theme once but now I want a customized theme so I hope I get around to hiring a designer soon. I think I liked your other theme more, but maybe it’s just because I had gotten used to it. Try godaddy.com for domain names, they’re reliable and offer their services for a reasonable price.

    Mine is $10.
I do like this format however and it’s something I’d love to use on the Cruise Blog I’m thinking about starting. I’ve wanted to try Wordpress anyhow.

I pay $50 a year for my .com address. That never sounded like too much until right now. I got a discount this year by referring others to the service but it still sounds expensive after reading this post and the comments.

I like this new clean look… although I had to refresh the page about 5 times before I realized I was at the right place :)

I use GoDaddy for my domain. They are so damn cheap I can’t imagine going anywhere else. I hope the $34 dollar price is for a 5 year registration!

I pay about 9 dollars a year (cheaper if do more than 1 year) and plus they are always having sales and things like which can lower the price as low as $.99

Oh I love the new look.

I have never changed my blog theme in 2 years, hmm…maybe I should?

As far as charging more money, its a wise idea to drop what you dont love/need/update often.

I think I pay something like 12-15 a month? I have no idea its on automatic withdrawl payments on a credit card with a statement that I never check!

Glad you are up and blogging with full internet access again.

welcome to the party topolk, can i get you a drink?

well this is my 3rd design. the first one may not count because on one read it. i like this one a lot. it’s easy to customized, easy to read and i love the navigation links up top, just what i’ve always wanted. i have a few more changes to make, but slowly. well when you get a domain name please don’t pay 34.95 for it. i use 1 and 1 dot com now. 6.00$. for some reason i like this design myself. simple and clean is all i’m about these days.

barbara, the back end is smooth. i didn’t have to hand code the header, it was so simple. my other theme had some issues with wordpress…when many of you would have to click a button to get things to work, i would have to install a plugin. really you changed your theme that many times, wow. well i look forward to your next theme. i use blue host for hosting, 10.00 a year is okay, not 34.95 a year.

robin, the other theme was not too far off from this one, just less room. i’m happy with it. it’s simple. i’ve heard of dream host, but i don’t think i’ve been to them. will check them out. right now i’m at 1 and 1 dot com. i’m in the process of moving a few domains and getting rid of the rest.

jay, well yeah, close to being ripped off. i will roll over in my grave before i pay 34.95 a year. almost 300$ for all my domains if i stay with them. sorry. no can do.

marelisa, i would love a custom theme, i just don’t want to pay…for some reason i want something cartoonish. i’ll check out godaddy, but i think i’m okay on a replacement. i just wanted to know if this was normal or did i really bump my head.

mamaflo, 10$ is all i have for a domain name. i didn’t like the 12.95 i paid for the renewal of 2 domains. yes, go with wordpress, i love it. tried a few before i decided on this one.

chase march, 50!!! what does a 50$ domain name do? i don’t know, but it’s not going to do it in my wallet. that’s a lot, really. what do you get? it’s a bit expensive to me.

monique, lol. it’s funny, normally i would warn people that i’m changing my theme so they won’t get confused, but i did so much testing and configuring with widgets that i said, this thing is going up now before i forget what i did. still a work in progress. i’m going to see how much godaddy charges, i don’t remember, but i’m sure it’s not 34.95$ 9$ is good. over 10.00 i will need fries with that.

what’s up girlfriend, hope you are feeling better. meleah, you could write on a sheet of paper and hold it up to a webcam and i would read it. i like that your blog is strictly writing…no distractions. theme or no theme, doesn’t matter. hold on, you pay 12-15 a month for what? hosting? not a domain name? don’t make me get on the turnpike. my internet connection is not fixed yet, hopefully tomorrow.

robert, it stirs my blood. i will say one thing, high prices make you get rid of stuff you don’t need. i could transfer the domains some place cheaper, but i’m okay without them. i don’t have time anyway.

Two years for $23.66 Canadian…what’s that, um $23.66 US? *smile* Getting the domain was easy. Getting typepad to recognize it was a pain in the You Know What. Urbane Lion to the rescue..yet again!…and he finally broke down and raised a ticket with typepad. That’s right, the Lion asked for help!

I like this site. It’s calm, cool and collected. Just like you *grin*

Dude, I cannot imagine paying $35 just for the domain! Someone needs to call Icahn and see what’s up. I’m liking the design–it’s easy on the eyes on centered on your writing. I hope to do a redesign sometime soon, but the thought of committing is freaking me out.

I didn’t know what I was doing when I set up my websites. I use doteasy and they have free web-based email and design templates for creating the website. It made it really easy for me. I really like the web-based email and the templates are easy to use and update.

Maybe it is too much but if I transfered I would need to totally recreate my sites. I wonder if that’s worth it.

URBAN, too early to be thinking, i’ll say it’s um $23.66. lol I don’t know ALL that goes on with registering a domain, but if somebody can do the same thing for less money with good service, i’m going with the least expensive one. Men who ask for help are smart! How do you like typepad anyway, I noticed that you were registered with them. Thanks, I like this theme too, still trying to figure out some things, but I’ll work with it. ;)

Sara, I had too many domains to pay $35 and knowing that I have been getting my last two for 6.00 each…just couldn’t stay there. I do like your theme Sara on your blog, it is clean and no distractions, goes well with your message.

CORRINA, I kid you not. Never heard of inexpensive domains, but I did check out your hosting company, not a bad deal. $15 is way better than $35. I will say that Yahoo is pretty quick about registering their domains, but that’s not something I need in a hurry.

CHASE, I’ve heard of dot easy, you use them? I have to go back and look at your blog. If you change your registrar, you don’t have to *move* to another hosting company, well you shouldn’t. I’ve sold and transferred a domain, hosting company stayed in tact although they sucked big time.

MELEAH, it’s true. Your blog is like a cookie to me. I will eat/read it anyway you serve it, no packaging necessary. lol. It’s about the words. Feel better! Okay on the visit.

VERED, I like your blog theme and the purple circles. Easy and fun to read as well. Will see you there! GoDaddy seems to be a big hit with everyone, I wonder why I overlooked them to go to 1 and 1 dot com? I wrote Yahoo just to be sure I read the price correctly and it wasn’t a spam email. I’m like okay then, it’s been nice. See Ya!

    LISA, $10 works for me!

CINDI, thanks. It’s easy on the eyes as far as the text spacing too. Not bad with making behind the scene changes, now only if I understood the coding. ;). Well Go Daddy.

BK, thanks. I’m still waiting on the first one to complete and then I will move this one because it expires mid-August. It takes about 7-8 days after you request the transfer. I moved hosting companies before with little down time before, so hopefully this will go just as smooth.

I’ve changed blog themes at least five times. I’m about to change mine again. I like it but I want something new. I believe this to be the longest I’ve kept a theme. And I don’t think it has been more than seven months yet.

Good luck with your migration. I think Yahoo wants too much for the services they provide.

Interesting, in a bad way. Similarly, I recently rec’d the renewal for my 3 year subscription to the Farmer’s Almanac the other day. The price had DOUBLED. Not increased a few bucks, not increased several bucks…DOUBLED. I sent it back w/a scrawled message concerning what I thought of the new price, compared to the cost to check the magazine out of the local library (at which I work…Free, of course.)

Dreamhost (and I presume other web hosts) provides private registration for free. I didn’t even know this was a big deal until I registered a .me domain which I need to to go through GoDaddy for - they charge $9.99 a year for private registration. What a rip off!

Peter Answers. Wow, 9.99 for private registration. I now use 1 and 1 and they do it for free. $6 bucks for a domain with private. My buck stops there.
