Is Your Subscriber Count Showing?

LL Cool J

During one of my EC dropping sessions, I stumbled across a post that linked a website that allows you to ‘compare your feedburner subscriber numbers with others’.  Interesting!

I assumed if that information was not made public, it was for a reason.

When I started blogging I displayed my subscriber count1 because that’s what I saw on other blogs. I watched it go from 4 to 7 and then back down to 4.

What happened was my first reaction.

As a newbie, it made me feel anxious and unsure of myself, watching the numbers fluctuate, as if somehow it dictated my existence and worth. Maybe it did at one time, numbers are performance indicators. Once I knew what I wanted on my blog, I removed my RSS readership count [and most badges] from my blog. Once in a while, I do check my subscriber count, but like my financial investments, I don’t want to see my portfolio every day.

Maybe displaying our readership is a gauge on how we’re doing as bloggers, maybe it’s a competition, maybe it encourages future subscribers, maybe it’s an ego thing, maybe it means nothing and we’re just darn happy and proud. Maybe I feel creeped out by what people can find out, maybe I’m just too chicken to publicly teeter on the emotional seesaw of “you suck” and “you the woman”.

Different strokes for different folks, but I’m curious…Is your RSS feed count showing?  If so why or why not?

Are you more likely to subscribe to a blog if their readership count is made public?

No, my RSS feed count’s not showing. I wouldn’t know how to do that, actually. I don’t know that I’d bother, though. Like you say, I’d worry about it then & I’m just blogging for fun, so why ruin that?

I believe it’s supposed to encourage more people to subscribe.

So far I haven’t placed it on my sidebar, because not only does it fluctuate a lot, but for me it often tends to show zero subscribers in the morning, and correct itself later on.

Having said that, I think I will put it up eventually.

I like to read a post that’s so thought-provoking you have to say…hmmmm and then leave your 2 cents worth. This is one of those posts. My little subscriber box is present on my site with a nice little tribute to those who’ve subscribed right beneath it. It does fluctuate a lot but it’s my way of showing those who have subscribed that I appreciate them and I want the world to know it. The numbers don’t really matter. One day it dropped by about 20 or so. I wasn’t sure what that was all about but kept blogging away as normal.

    Mine is not showing.

And I plan to keep it that way. I honestly don’t see the point in telling anyone how many people are subscribing to my blog. If people want to subscribe they will. Telling them I have 200 readers shouldn’t be a factor in deciding if they enjoy my blog enough to add it to their reader… should it?

Nope. Can’t say I bother caring about it too much. My blog is a hobby more than anything else and with all hobbies, I’m here just to have fun. I do keep an eye on page views, but I don’t sweat the details on how many people have me in their RSS feed.

I don’t have my subscriber count showing; I don’t know how (blush). I did have my blog stats showing the number of views my blog was getting, until I saw a recent post that had received over 1,000 views. My blog has received almost 2,000 in 8 weeks (blush again).

You know, I think I’m content right now not to know how many subscribers I have. I’m happy with the current community and that’s enough for now.

    Hi Natural,

I don’t have mine showing. I often wonder how accurate it is anyway. I remember reading how the numbers can be manually manipulated, and after that, it’s made me doubt. Depending on what statistical program is used, they all show different numbers, too. Do we every get accurate numbers anyway? Maybe not!

Oy vey. I wish I were as self actualized as you and most of your readers. I am not. I am competitive and I do want to see how other blogs rate. Do I have more readers or less?

Is their Alexa rank as high as mine or lower? How can their Alexa rank be better than mine but they have fewer subscribers? And vice versa, how can they have more readers but a worse Alexa rank?

Yes, it’s a competitive tool and I should free myself from the shackles of its domination. But I don’t see it happening anytime soon.

It is a bit like broadcasting your weight and your salary on your blog.

I have mine showing, but as you said, Valerie, it does affect one’s self-esteem. I am pretty good now, but in early days I was absolutely obsessed with it.
Having read your post, I’m tempted to remove it again. As for Entrecard, I question whether it’s as useful as it purports to be. For one thing, I don’t have the time to hang out looking for places to “drop in” and hoping that others will want to post me in their box. I have a pretty addictive personality and I could spend all day moving from page to page, “campaigning”. Really, do we gain much “traffic” that ultimately returns, as a result? I wonder about all these devices.

Hi Natural: My feedcounter is up on my blog for the world to see. I read somewhere that after you had 100 subscribers you should put it up, and that’s what I did. I think it gives a blog social acceptance and it gives others who drop by more of an incentive to stay and look around. I guess it says: see, others found my blog worthy, so should you. In an ideal world everyone would simply come to their own conclusions, but the reality is that most people want to be where there’s already other people. It’s the crowded-restaurant syndrome: “Oooh, crowded restaurant, the food must be great!”

Hi Natural - that’s kind of funny because I used to subscribe to blogs if they showed gaudy numbers. Now it’s almost a turn-off because I feel like I would be part of a herd.

For example, I feel like a real noob because I haven’t heard of the ReadWriteWeb blog until a couple weeks ago. They have over 200K subscribers - their feed was so big that they had to put a “K” at the end. My subscription count on my blog is their rounding error! I immediately wanted to subscribe because I didn’t want to be left out, but after looking around, they have the same info I can get from other web sites. The blogs I really get value from are typically the ones that are unique, not the ones that appeal to the masses.

With my obsessive-compulsive personality, I’m also afraid to have my feed count where I will always see them. Also, I’d have to agree with Mare - it might make sense to show feed count for social proof, but the community you have in the comment section is proof enough!

    Hi there Natural

I put mine up about 3 weeks ago - as a sort of a joke because it is so low! The topic of my blog is so strange and different that I thought it would be good to demonstrate that at least SOME people read it - and I thought showing it could also make the blog look sort of like a small exclusive club ha ha ha - now I’ve given my secret away - oh well.

I wish i understood how they get their numbers - it’s bizarre.

Lana, you sign up with feedburner dot com…when people subscribe to your blog through their link, they count your subscribers and you can display that information on your blog. When people see, myself once included, their subscriber count go down, they start screaming….I might be inclined to blog differently instead of being myself. It’s easier to be me.

Vered, if I happen to see it on a blog and it says 0 subscribers, I feel bad and think of subscribing, then I say wait a minute if nobody subscribes to your blog, why should I. Every blog should have at least 1 subscriber: Yourself. Yep, I subscribe to my blog just to check for visuals.

Solomon, yeah it probably is the “done thing”…I was just wondering why or why not people choose to show or not show. Another blogger, I read, has over 400,000 subscribers but that information is not displayed on his blog. Interesting.

Roschelle, that’s a nice way to look at it: tribute to those who’ve subscribed. I like that, never thought of it that way!

Monique, I don’t know if it should be a factor, that’s what I’m trying to figure out myself, if it really matters. If I like something, I will subscribe regardless, just wanted to know how much of an influence it has.

ToPolk, lol. I know it’s a hobby/job for me too. I don’t hate on numbers, but they do tell their own story. Somebody told me my Alexa something was up and I’m like up to what. What is that? I found out later. I’m not checking page views, stats or nothing. I peep at my subscribers when I have to, which is not often.

Davina, see comment above to Lana…at least that’s the only way I know how. Being in the shadow is not so bad, we can focus on what light we do see. Numbers do tell us something….I’m just starting to look at blogs myself and ask why this or that.

Barbara, I don’t know how accurate it is either. I did read somewhere that it could be manipulated too. Sometimes, I look at blogs and see 535 subscribers and 3 to 4 comments a post…this would leave me wondering: where are these people? I don’t see many of the big named bloggers commenting on any blogs, yet people worship them at the alter of feedburner.

Cardio Girl, oy vey is right. Well you are who you are. I know your competitiveness from reading your recent blog post. At least you know who you are and are true to it:

it’s a competitive tool….I should free myself ….but I don’t see it happening anytime soon. Made me chuckle. If it motivates you, keep it.

My weight is 168 and my salary is low. Couldn’t resist. ;)

Poetikat, on most days, I have a healthy dose of self-esteem that helps shake doubt, but I don’t need to see that everyday or every month. I don’t want to be motivated or not motivated by those number. I’m good at being me, that’s the one stubborn thing that doesn’t change much. Don’t take your badge down because of this post…that’s you.

As for Entrecard, I’m confused with a lot of things there, but I will say I have seen more traffic because of being able to find blogs quickly through dropping and commenting. It’s a lot of work though and takes time, I’m not a dropper, but have been doing more of it lately…only cause my kid has not been home. When school starts, I won’t have time to drop nothing. If you have an addictive personality then stay away from EC. Runnnnn ;)

Marelisa, really, I don’t think I’ve noticed it Mare, but I overlook a lot of stuff that stares me in the face. 100 subscribers seem like a good time to put it up, but some of us may never make it there. Good point, no one wants to eat at an ‘empty restaurant’. Social acceptance and incentive. Hmmm, thanks for sharing.

Al at 7P, funny I subscribe to RWW, but I don’t comment on their blog. Is for informational purposes only. I like their reviews, it keeps me up to date, a little. We have a lot of OCD people here ;) . I, like you, would go for what’s unique and appealing to me…not just the numbers.

Robin, really, haven’t notice that you did. Well I hope you at least subscribe to your blog. LOL.. a small exclusive club, I love it! I like the way you see.

  15. 15Apol

    thought provoking post…

I have a personal blog where number of subscribers is not showing. My other blog (canada immigration) has 100+ subscribers and I decided to put it up. Somehow, it helps attract readers/visitors to subscribe if they see that you have lots of subscribers. In my line of business, I need that. ;-)

  16. 16Mark Salinas

First time here…I am enjoying some good reads! Thanks!

  17. 17Ian Parker

I think it can be a good way to garner more subscribers, but only if the count is sufficiently high when you display it. Under 100 or so subscribers, and people may think twice about subscribing (groupthink that more is better).

On a personal blog, it probably isn’t necessary, but then some personal blogs explode in popularity, so where do you draw the line between personal and topical and whether or not to display it. Good question.

  18. 18Vered

OK, mine is showing now. :)

Mine is not showing. I follow the recommendation of Skellie. She recommends not showing it until the actual count is higher than what others may guess about your blog.

So for example, if you get loads of comments (as you do) people may assume you have thousands of subscribers! Let them assume this, instead of proving them otherwise with the rss showing.

I’m not sure what I have or don’t have. There is one of those orange thingys on both my blogs that I think have to do with RSS, but I didn’t put them there, I think Blogger did….the bigger question for me is - how do all you guys (commenters here, and others in general) LEARN all this stuff? Take a class, have geek friends, put a book under your pillow and absorb it during REM sleep??? Right now I’m more concerned with figuring out how to get notification when blogs I like put up new posts. I need to go to the clue store and pick up a few…

I don’t show my RSS subscriber numbers though I have read it encourages people to subscribe. Considering my traffic, mine are really not that impressive. Like I said on my 1 year anniversary post I can’t keep it over 200 so far.

In fact my subscribers have been completely stable for months now and I don’t know what to make of that. I do get stumbled a lot and derive good traffic from that. I receive lots of links and have a loyal commentor base, but I don’t appear to be growing . Sometimes this bothers me (ego attack) and I wonder if a niche or an redesign that shows more of what I’m about would help. Other times I think it’s irrelevant because I’m part of a wonderful community and that gives me a lot of joy.

Mostly I try not to look at stats because I don’t want to analyze myself or get insecure or competitive so I probably wouldn’t put up RSS numbers unless I went pro and they were really impressive.

Good topic. I have often wondered how people make this decision.

I put my number in my sidebar because I think it encourages subscriptions. But a more important indicator for me is the number of comments received. It tells me that people are really engaged and that’s better proof that people are really interested and reading what I have to say. Your blog is the same, always a healthy number of comments. It shows what a success your blog is. (You the woman!)

@ Bamboo Forest - that was one of my dilemmas. I “only” have 300 subscribers (which I am very proud of!), but lots of comments and a good Alexa rank. So, would people be turned off once they realize I don’t have thousands of subscribers?

Ultimately, I feel that I have nothing to hide. There are plenty of ways to guesstimate how many subscribers a blog has (one of them: Google Reader gives you the number for each blog you subscribe to, and you can pretty much guess the total number of subscribers based on that. And I’m sure there are other ways that I am unaware of, such as the website that Valerie mentions).

Anyway, this post made me finally put my reader count up. I am curious to see if it actually encourages people to subscribe.

Vered’s last blog post..Thank You For Smoking

  27. 27Natural

Apol, attracting readers seem to be the main reason for having it displayed on most blogs. Marelisa compared the count to an empty restaurant and deciding whether or not to enter, that makes sense. Cool. I stopped by your blog of course.

Mark, hi and thanks for stopping by. I haven’t tried out that push up yet.

Ian, yes it can be. I wonder if the opposite is true. What IF your RSS Readership was by invitation only? I wonder how many people would inquire about subscribing. Robin mentioned a club, people love what is exclusive.

Vered, cool. Now we have to hook you up to an EKG and monitor your heart rate. One fluctuation and it comes down. ;) Let us know if you see an increase or decrease.

Bamboo Forest, that sounds like good advice, I guess. I like a mystery, leaving some things to the imagination. Well I don’t have thousands of subscribers, that’s fine cause I probably wouldn’t know how to act, but everyone here is great, the conversation, the feedback….it’s a beautiful thing.

Deborah, I learn by asking questions and observation. I have been looking (studying) blogs a lot more to see what a person is doing that encourages participation. I like the book under the pillow thing though…well what you need is to either subscribe to their blog (this info is usually prominent on ALL blogs), by using the orange thingy or a subscription link. Shoot me an email if you wish and I’ll help you….anytime.

Tondy, you only read 4 blogs!!! Wow. I know I have more personalities than that and they all need to be satisfied with their own blog to read. Hehehe. I like to read everything! Well I’m honored to be one of four…wow, I wonder if I cut my blogs down to four which four would I keep. I have to go think about this……hmmmmm. You make me laugh woman!

Kelly, if you have close to 200, that’s awesome after just a year, does a number come after 200? ;) You’re doing something right. I don’t know what causes a blog to grow other than commenting on other blogs, building a community.

Robert, well no need to worry about it then. You do get to know the regulars that visit your blog…kinda cool.

Kathy, hey, welcome back! Hope you had a great trip. I’ll be over to read about Oh, Canada. Did you get lost? I would still be there right now had we gone. Anywho, subscribers can tell you a lot, but the number of comments is also a good way to tell as well. If people are only concerned with getting subscribers, then how do you connect with your readers if they don’t comment. I’m not half the woman you are…well you know what I mean. ;)

I guess McDonalds was on to something when they said over 12 Billion sold…

Feefifoto, hello and welcome. That’s probably the thing to do, build up your readership, then display. I followed the crowd, that doesn’t usually work for me in the long term…I doubt I will put it back, maybe I can encourage subscribers some other way, like making a goofy Shameless Blog Promotion video. Tatoo of my web address, bumper sticker? ;)

Vered, only 300? No, I’m not turned off or turned on right now. You obviously worked hard to get them and put a lot of time into your blog. Okay I purposely didn’t link the site, but weaved a search clue in the post. You were the only one to ask. Did anybody find it/try it out?

  28. 28Urban Panther

I completely forget to check my subscriber count. I finally did the other day, and I had gone form 4 to 27. This was a pleasant surprise, but now I’ll likely forget for another month. I count my success by the number of comments I get. I realize there are more people who read and don’t comment, than read and do, but it’s the dialogue that really gets my mojo going.

As for seeing it on other people’s sites? I never pay any attention. And while it is nice after a blogging anniversary, say of 1 year, to thank people by saying “Woo-hoo, you helped me get to X subscribers” I am not interested in a regular update in a post. We are all putting our heart and souls into blogging. The reality is, I may find the person with 5 subscribers far more motivational than someone with a gazillion.

Hi Valerie - that is the one big thing that sucks about the Internet - people can find out way to much about us. I take no notice of the subscriber thing. I’ve often wondered how many folk are fiddling it, when I see they have thousands of subscribers.

I read a post today, showing how those numbers were easily fiddled. The guy who wrote about it had more or less the same alexa rank as me and around the same number of subscribers. I guess you could expect that

So it’s amazing to see that some of these blogs who are getting similar amounts of traffic have anywhere between 10 and 100 times the amount of subscribers we have. That must be an awful lot of people, who sign up and don’t return.

The trouble is, a lot of these bloggers go to massive lengths to create a perceived popularity. And it’s does tend to make those not in the know feel inadequate.

The way I see it is this - so long as folk are visiting your blog - who cares how they get there.

  32. 32Natural

Urban Panther, cool. You crack me up over there. Once a month works for me or even longer. I haven’t set many standards when it comes to blogging, I guess I keep the bar low….don’t know if that’s good or bad.

Chris, stop it. ;) Bad might be 0.

Nhil, well as much as we’d like to keep things to ourselves, anybody can now look up your subscriber number. No we can’t be sure everyone is reading, but I guess it can be bait.

CathLawson, yeah they can. Little creepy. I’m trying to figure things out myself on how to attract participants…not only subscribers. I’ve picked up a few tips just by looking at a blog and asking why this or that. I read too that the numbers can be fiddled….don’t know how you do that. Yes, I found that site and played with it a little. You can definitely see subscriber counts there even for sites that don’t display them, but not for all sites.

It looks like for many blogs, a good rule of thumb is, that the general subscriber count is about three times what Google Reader shows. So, as I said, none of this is really a secret. Anyone who wants to, can easily estimate how many subscribers you have.

Re fiddling, ProBlogger recently wrote about one way of doing it:
How To Get 2500 New Subscribers To Your Blog

However, when blogs show an obviously inflated number of subscribers (and I can think of a couple that I know personally), it doesn’t make me feel inadequate at all. It makes me feel sorry for the bloggers who feel the need to do that.

This is a fascinating discussion! Thank you for bringing it up. If I haven’t stumbled it yet, I am going to now.

I have Firestats, but no, nothing to show how many subscribers I have. I suppose it would be interesting to know, but I wouldn’t put a counter on my blog. I don’t put anything like that up … I may do one day, maybe, but it seems self-indulgent to me. I don’t mean that in a judgemental way about others, merely that it would feel that way to me. It’s not in my nature to have those kind of things out there on display.

I can’t think how it would help increase traffic, or I might just think about it. LOL!

First of all I would like to thank-you for stopping by my blog and encouraging me to learn to shift gears on my Suzuki. I am going to seriously try.

I do not put any stats at all on my blogs, links in or my subscribers because like so many said I do not want to obsess about it and I don’t like to compare my blogs with other blogs and wonder why mine aren’t doing as well as theirs.

I don’t even have the real rank showing from Izea even though it’s a good number. I simply don’t like to be compared.

I was one of those bloggers who had to have every widget, chicklet, blodget, flidget, and smodget in my sidebar. I like showing my subscription numbers because those stats do mean something to me. I don’t think my blog is any better than a blog with fewer subscribers; I’m just proud of what I’ve accomplished.

But I agree with Kathy. A better gauge is comments. I treasure my readers and commenters. You can have 5,000 subscribers, but if no one participates, what’s the point?

I don’t know if it’s just me, but when I subscribed to your feed (you’re welcome ;)) it kept coming up in Google Reader as “title unknown”.

Jude, oh you’re welcome. I hope you go through with learning how to drive a stick. It’s frustrating at first, you might want to cry and throw your bike 100 yards or kick it, but you will love it after you learn. Keep us posted on your blog, I’ll check back.

JD, hey there. I had a row of chicklets and a bunch of stuff myself…don’t know why, following the masses. ….and you should be proud. You’re holding it down quite well over there…I will see you later.

Feefifoto, I know someone told me that before, but I don’t know how to fix it. All I know how to do is to rename the feed once it’s in google. I tried subscribing with other readers and the name of my blog comes up just fine, but not in google.

If anybody can tell me how to fix this, I’d appreciate it. I did a search and still can’t fix it. Maybe it has something to do with me taking the name out of wordpress and using my own header, but as I mentioned other readers don’t seem to have a problem. Help.

oh and thanks for putting me in your reader.

Do readers care how many subs the blogger boasts? I wonder. I get asked all the time from my fellow bloggers how many subs I have…but my actual readers have never inquired. :D
