Man Gives Couple $100,000…

I watched this story on Yahoo! and I thought, wow what a great story and then I heard the conditions. The couple has to name their next child after him (the giver) and they also have to build a house with the money. A child (and a house) is a huge expense and had I known he wanted a child with naming rights out of the deal, I would have written a bigger check! Now if having another child was in their future, okay, this is a great start, but if not, I wouldn’t rush into fulfilling this promise too soon. I probably would put the money somewhere it could grow and not touch it for a few years.

This got me to thinking: If you gave someone a monetary gift, do you have the right to tell them how to spend it? Would you put any conditions on it? (This excludes minor children).

The story is heartwarming and the saying proves true, “there is greater happiness in giving than there is in receiving!”

$100,000 is not enough to build a house and raise a child. It certainly helps, but its not enough.
Wow! Why can’t something like that happen to me? I have to move to Iowa!

I don’t know, that’s a tough one. If you give a “gift” and put any kind of restrictions on it, it seems less of a gift to me. It sounds more like payment for something. It’s interesting that if you change the amount to say, $5,000, would the couple have agreed to naming their child after the donor? Likely not. Which just goes to show everyone has a price. Interesting story. Thanks for sharing.

    Hey RMR
Nope it’s not enough, but a nice gesture..minus the strings attached?

Kathy, I agree…is it really a gift? If the in-laws said we’d give y ou 100,000 to have another kid, how many people would find that offensive.

Again, this is a nice gesture…minus the strings.

I have to agree with RMR, I’m moving to Iowa. True,
$100,000 with not be enough to build a house but hey, it’s certainly a good top up. There is some good in this world. Any who, I’m sure they’re tracking the mystery stranger already. Just a thought, do you think a woman would be so generous?

    Tondy,

There is good in this world, certainly not enough of it. This site hightlight activities such as the one you saw in the video: http://www.actsofkindness.org/

Hmm, if your name is Oprah, yeah…I haven’t heard of too many women being so generous, but I’m sure there are some stories out there. If you know of one, put them on blast!

I think this is a wonderful gesture & if all parties agree to the terms, good for them!

Lana, that’s true, it just doesn’t seem like a gift when you put conditions on it….but yes, if they agree to it, okay good, okay fine.

Is this meant to be a tiny house? Like a shack in the back of someones house? I mean it’s a nice start but definitely not enough to “build” a house.

If he had a nice name I could easy name my kid after him… Especially since I have the name Juju picked out for my own kid. =/

    What’s up Monique

I guess it’s 100,000 more than they had, but I wouldn’t run off to Home Depot and start building too fast.

I would have to veto the child-naming thing… What if his name is horrible? I would, however, name a fish after him.

That’s funny Corrina, a fish! lol. I wonder what his name is, hmmm? What if its a girl, do they HAVE to call her Bob?

Ok, this must be the guy’s biological father (mother had an affair?) and he’s wanting to do something for his son. So, here’s $100k, but you need to buy a house for my grandkids. Also, would be really nice if you named the next one after me.

laughing out loud steve, hmmm? never looked at it from that point of view. that’s funny.
