Mindboggling

Amazing! These pictures give you a different perspective seeing them side by side. I thought they were cool, then I started looking up the plants/stars and I got carried away. Well you learn something new everyday and who knows, these facts could be final Jeopardy answers. Of course, we recently learned that Pluto is no longer a planet, but a dwarf planet….not to be considered a true planet. So when it comes to planets, size does matter. Happy Thursday! I do not own the copyright to these photos.

Planets1

Distance from the Earth to the Sun: 93,020,000 miles (149,669,180 km)
Earth distance to the Moon: 238,857 miles (384,403.1 km)

Planets2

One hundred and nine Earths would be required to fit across the Sun’s disk.
The suns interior could hold over 1.3 million Earths.

Planets3

Arcturus is the brightest star in the constellation Bootes. It’s the fourth brightest star in the night sky.
Pollux is the brightest star in the constellation Gemini and one of the brightest in the nighttime sky.
Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. Intrinsically, Sirius is over 20 times brighter than our Sun and over twice as massive. ~Wikipedia

Planets4

Jupiter is the most massive planet in our solar system. In 2003 alone, astronomers discovered 23 new moons orbiting the giant planet, giving Jupiter a total moon count of 49 officially named — the most in the solar system. Read more

Planets5

Who ever heard of these stars? They look like bowling balls, actually they all do. I’ve seen some balls that resemble plants, maybe that’s where ball makers get their designs.

While Betelgeuse is cooler than the Sun, it is more massive and over 1000 times larger….more

Antares is a huge star. In a class called red supergiant, Antares is about 700 times the diameter of our own Sun, 15 times more massive, and 10,000 times brighter. Antares is the brightest star in the constellation of Scorpius and one of the brighter stars in all the night sky….more

    Hi there!

Oddly enough, I only learned that Pluto was no longer considered a planet through a Jeopardy question!

I’d like to invite you to a private blog. Can you send me an e-mail at adivers@inbox.com so I can contact you?

    Thanks,

    Kat

Wow, seeing all this really puts things in perspective! I had no idea the sun was so big… or Jupiter for that matter. I’ve forgotten most of what I knew of the planets, except humans would weigh something like 10 times as more on Jupiter than on Earth… yeah, something like that!

The last picture puts it all into perspective for me. I have a hard time even fathoming the math involved in determining just how insignificant of a spec we are in the grant scheme of the universe.

You have put the whole thing into perspective thinking about it in a normal manner is mind boggling..this puts it in away I can grasp..

Hi Poetikat, Is that right? Jeopardy covers everything! I send you an email. Thanks.

Doesn’t it Jillian? I just happen to know facts about the sun, and seeing the visual really brings it all together.

    Amazing it is Meleah Rebeccah.

True Michael. I guess when we start to think how “big” we are, these pictures are quite humbling.

I agree Robert, I couldn’t imagine anything larger than the sun, then I see these other stars and it’s like, WOW!

Thanks Barbara, a friend emailed them to me and I saved them to show my daughter at first, then I said, “hey, post them. someone else might like them too.”

Very cool. I’ve been an amateur astronomer for years now, so this is somewhat “common knowledge” for me. Another amazing thing to consider (in our own solar system,) is that each planet is twice as far from the Sun (roughly) as the one before it. Can you imagine the size of our solar system? It hurts my brain!

    I agree Mags, so amazing.

Really Lana, that’s interesting. I didn’t know that about the distance…that’s freaking amazing. Wow..no I can’t imagine. These pics are mind boggling enough.

Pretty neat pics. I especially like the one where you can see Earth next to the sun. The size difference is insane! Ever wonder why all the planets are perfectly round and not egg shaped or something? (at least in pictures anyway)

I thought so too Mikey777. I never wondered why plants are not egg shaped, but are round. Hold on, now you got me wondering…..

Here’s a link. I can’t do 2nd grade math, no way I’m going to be able to explain this:
